How to Get Rid of Very Strong Foot Odor?

While everyone’s feet sweat and have some odor, very strong foot odor, also called bromodosis, can be caused by different factors. Thankfully, there are many effective ways to help get rid of strong foot odor.

Wash Your Feet Daily

One of the best ways to combat foot odor is to wash your feet daily with soap and water. Use an anti-bacterial soap and wash between your toes gently but thoroughly. The bacteria and sweat that builds up between toes is one of the major causes of foot odor. Make sure to dry your feet completely after washing, especially between the toes.

Soak Your Feet

Soaking your feet helps tackle foot odor from another angle – it softens calluses and dry skin that trap bacteria and sweat. Fill a basin with warm water and add a teaspoon of baking soda. Soak your feet for 15-20 minutes, then scrub them gently with a pumice stone or foot scrubber. Dry your feet completely afterwards. Do this 2-3 times a week.

Apply Antiperspirant or Deodorant

Applying an antiperspirant or deodorant to your feet can help control sweating and bacteria growth. Use a gentle, non-irritating formula specifically made for feet. Bacteria and odor flourish in damp, stale socks. Having a few pairs of newer socks can help reduce foot odor. Also, avoid wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row to allow them to dry out fully.

Do this once daily until foot odor improves. You can also wipe your feet down with undiluted vinegar using a cotton pad.

Essential oils like tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint and lavender have anti-fungal and antibacterial properties to combat foot odor. Add a few drops of your chosen oil to a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil. Rub the mixture all over your feet and between toes before bed. Do not use essential oils directly on skin.
